Thundercat – Friend Zone

Friend Zone is a lot of fun. It’s the first track I’ve heard from Thundercat, who has been active for over a decade. His warm, layered vocals intertwine with a scalic chiptune-y melody and a simple semitone alternation in the bass that despite being repetitive really holds the song together. Although the tune is playful, the lyrics are a bit melancholy; poking fun at the ‘burden’ of being in the friendzone and how to deal with it. I’ll probably get round to listening to the rest of the album Drunk soon, which I’ve heard it rather good.
